My Journey to becoming Cisco CCIE certified

Picture
So, my journey has pretty much begun to achieve my numbers (CCIE).  In all honest when I began the CCNA around fifteen months ago, I never thought I would go after the CCIE.  I figured I would achieve my CCNP and that would be my stopping point.  But since passing the BSCI, I have known that I wasn't going to stop at the CCNP certification level.  I haven't been able to stop learning Cisco technologies.  Without learning, I feel there is something missing.  Which brings me to this point of going after my CCIE certification.

So the current status is I have completed Chapter 4 of Wendell Odom's QoS guide, I'm moving on to Chapter 5.  A lot of the material is review of material that is contained in the CCIE R&S V 4.0 Cert guide.  But, I want to ensure that I have a full grasp on these technologies and the theory behind QoS mechanisms.  I will be reading more of this guide this weekend and doing some QoS labs.  I will keep you posted on my status.  Currently, my next move after QoS is going to be MPLS.  Check back for updates.

I have at this point completed the QoS portion of the CCIE Routing & Switching 4.0 Cert Guide.  In an attempt to get a full picture and better understanding of the different methods and techniques used within QoS, I have started reviewing the areas QoS that I want to be sure to understand in the QoS Cert Guide.  Such as classification and marking, congestion management, and traffic policing and shaping.  Mainly the area of review I want to have a moe solid grasp on is the Traffic policing and shaping area.  I can understand how traffic is classified and how it is marked, how to manage congestion with queue methods such as LLQ and CBWFQ, and of course the older queuing mechanisms such as:  FIFO, Priority queuing, Weighted Fair Queuing, etc... My journey for the next day or few days is to read these areas of review in the QoS Cert Guide.  Once I have done this, I'm going to go back through everything and do some labbing to get the commands down and ensure that I understand what each command does.

Well, I may as well update at this point my status.  My CCIE studies began two days ago on the 6th.  I didn't have a set structure until today.  To be honest, A LOT of the material looks like review of the CCNP, especially material from the BSCI such as BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, ETC..... There are some other areas that I haven't touched too much and that go into more depth such as Multicasting, QoS, and MPLS, I'm sure I'll run into some other things that go more in-depth on my journey as well.  So, my beginning point is to tackle the headache and start with QoS.  I figured since I read the entire ONT book which covers A LOT about QoS, I may as well start here.  I read the book, but I have to be honest and say that I lack the most knowledge from this area.  From what I've heard a good approach is finding the areas your weak, and getting comfortable with them and tackling them 1 by 1.  So, that's my plan.

This morning, I managed to watch the CBT Nuggets 1st Video for Classification and Marking.  Seems like a lot of review from what I seen  in the Train Signals video for the ONT exam.  I have been reading Chapter 12 of the CCIE Exam Certification Guide today, Classification and Marking, to back up and review what I watched in the video, and fill in the gaps.  Tomorrow I shall tackle Congestion Manamagent and Avoidance and Saturday morning finishing up w/ Shaping, Policing, and Link Fragmentation, followed up by putting everything together and labbing everything out.  My next post, will probably follow up on Sunday, after hitting all these areas, and practicing everything.  So, feel free to check back on a regular basis for updates.  Until then, Thanks for following my progress from CCNP to CCIE!!

My Cisco CCIE Routing and Switching Guide V. 4 has arrived, I reviewed what is contained in the material and a good bit looks like a lot of CCNP reviewing.  But, I know that it isn't going to be an easy ride.  I plan to study for approximately six months and then take my CCIE Written Exam, after that has been accomplished, I will then start preparing for the Lab portion of the certification track.  I wanted to update and let everyone know that I will be beginning to dive into the CCIE materials sometime this weekend probably Sunday or Monday.

More updates to come!!!
